Chenonceau castle over the Cher river |
Chenonceau is named "Chateau des Dames" because it had been built by Katherine Buissonet in 1513, and was embellished by Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medicis. And during the french revolution, it has been protected by Madame Dupin who emphasized the role of the bridge as a crucial local transport link across the river. All these strong women marked Chenonceau Castle history.
The interior of Chenonceau castle
The interior of Chenonceau castle is well furnished and has charming particularity : it is full of fresh flowers. Each room is decorated with an original floral composition. 3 florists work in the château to change the gorgeous bunches twice a week, and the flowers come from the castle gardens.

During the tour, our children were really impressed by the completely restored kitchen. Uncountable copper pans and pots, an amazing old stove, all ready to be used :)

The gardens of Chenonceau castle
Chenonceau offers to visit the two gardens of Diane de Poitier and Catherine de Medicis. 40 000 flowers grow on the Domain, and the gardens are beautiful.

In the gardens, you will find a maze, rebuilt from Catherine de Medicis plans. In summer time, you can try to lose your children inside :)

And for the younger children, there is a donkey park. If the donkeys are in a good mood, the children should be able to pet them.

If your children know how to swim, you must absolutely rent a canoe and paddle on the Cher River. You will see Chenonceau from the middle of the river and even pass under the castle arches. A very pleasant activity for the whole family !
